古英語 grimm に由来し、さらにゲルマン祖語 *grimmaz「激しい・苛烈な」にさかのぼります。もとは「ぞっとするほど荒々しい」感触の語で、独語 grimmig も同根と知ると、単なる「暗い」より「容赦ない」に近いと納得できます。
