helix「らせん」からできた形容詞で、helix はラテン語経由でギリシャ語 helix「巻いたもの、ねじれ」にさかのぼります。helic-「らせん」+ -al「…に関する」と見れば、「ねじれて進む形」から「らせん状の」になる流れが分かり、helicoid も同系です。
