ドイツ語 heroisch（英雄的な）に由来。1898年にバイエル社が鎮痛剤として命名し、服用時の万能感・高揚感から「英雄的な気分にさせる薬」の意。語根はギリシャ語 hērōs（英雄）で、hero と同根。
Heroin was formed as a commercial name in the late nineteenth century from German heroisch, meaning “heroic.” Bayer introduced the name in 1898 for a drug then marketed medicinally. Heroisch ultimately belongs to the same Greek-derived word family as English hero. The name later became the common term for diacetylmorphine, an opioid now chiefly discussed in connection with addiction, overdose, treatment, and illegal drug use.
