hypochondriac はギリシャ語 hypokhondriakos に由来し、hypo「下」+ chondros「軟骨」から成ります。もとは「肋軟骨の下の腹部」を指し、その部位が病や憂うつの源と考えられたため「病気を気にしすぎる人」の意味になり、関連語に hypochondrium や chondritis があります。
