hypochondriaはギリシャ語hypo「下」+ chondr-「軟骨」+ -iaがラテン語へ入った語で、もとは「肋軟骨の下の部位」を指した。hypodermicやchondritisと同系で、その場所の不調が憂うつの源と考えられたため、心気症の意味へ移った。
