新しい考えや解決策を生み出すために、自由に案を出したり発展させたりする発想の過程を指します。特に企画・デザイン・問題解決の場面で使われ、まだ評価や絞り込みを行う前の、アイデアを広く生み出す段階を表す語です。
Ideation is the process of developing and exploring new ideas. It is often used in business, design, writing, and problem-solving when people are trying to think creatively. The word usually refers to the stage before a final plan or product is chosen.

ideationはギリシャ語idea「形、見える姿」に由来するideaに、名詞化接尾辞-ationが付いた語です。ide-は「見る」に通じるので、頭の中の像がはっきり姿を取ることが「発想する」ことだと分かります。関連語はideal、idol。
Ideation comes from idea plus the noun-forming suffix -ation. Idea comes from Greek idea, originally meaning form or visible appearance, from a root connected with seeing.
