adverb

気付きづかないほどに

解説 Definition

人が感覚ではほとんど捉えられないほど、変化や動作などが目立たない様子を表す副詞。変化が徐々に進む文脈でもよく使われるが、時間をかけて進むこと自体を意味するわけではない。

In a way that is so slight, gradual, or small that people do not notice it. It is often used for changes in movement, sound, appearance, or feeling that happen very slowly.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

perceive「気づく」が分かれば、imperceptible は「気づけない」、-ly が付いて「気づけないほどに」とつながる。slowly や gradually は単にゆっくりだが、imperceptibly は「その場ではほぼ知覚できず、後で振り返ると進んでいた」という感覚。temperatures rose imperceptibly, the mood shifted imperceptibly のように、温度・表情・関係のごく微妙な変化とセットで覚えると定着しやすい。

Start from perceive, which means noticing something. Add im- and -ible, and you get imperceptible: too small to notice; then -ly makes it an adverb. Think of common pairs like "change imperceptibly" or "rise imperceptibly" for tiny movement you only notice later.

例文

The climate changes imperceptibly over many decades.

imperceptibly の語源・成り立ち Etymology

imperceptibly は in-「否定」+ percept「知覚」+ -ible「できる」+ -ly から成る。percept はラテン語 percipere「しっかり受け取る」にさかのぼるため、「知覚できないほどに」がそのまま「いつの間にか」になる。関連語は perceive、perception。

Imperceptibly is formed from in- "not," percept, -ible "able to be," and -ly. The core comes from Latin percipere, meaning "to take in fully" or "perceive." So the word literally means "in a way that cannot be noticed," which led to its sense of something happening so gradually that you hardly detect it.
