apoplectic は名詞 apoplexy「卒中」の形容詞形で、フランス語・後期ラテン語を経てギリシャ語 apoplēktikos にさかのぼる。apo-「離れて・完全に」＋ plēssein「打つ」から成り、もとは「打ち倒された」状態、そこから倒れそうなほど興奮した人を指して「激怒した」の意味へ広がった。関連語は apoplexy。
Apoplectic comes from apoplexy, through French and Late Latin, from Greek apoplektikos. The Greek parts are apo- and plessein, "to strike," giving the sense of being struck down. From that physical idea, the word later widened in English to describe someone so angry or upset that they seem close to collapse.
