Etymology

Implicating is the -ing form of implicate. Implicate ultimately comes from Latin implicare, “to fold in, entangle, or involve,” formed from in-, “in,” and plicare, “to fold.” The physical image of something folded or entangled within something else developed into the idea of involvement and, later, of evidence suggesting a person’s involvement. Complicate and explicit contain historically related elements involving folding or unfolding.
