惰性的な、変化に抵抗する
adjective 形容詞組織や制度、行動などが従来の状態を惰性で保ち、変化しにくいことを表します。物理的な慣性を比喩的に用いた語義で、改革への消極性などを述べる文脈に現れます。
物質が静止し続けようとする、または動き続けようとする性質に関連しています。物理学で重要な概念です。
Inertial means related to inertia, the tendency of an object to resist changes in its motion. It is used in physics and engineering when talking about movement, force, and balance. The word often describes systems, effects, or measurements connected with that resistance.
まず inert を核に覚えると残りやすい。inert は「動かない・反応しにくい」で、そこから inertia が「今の状態を保とうとする性質」、さらに -al が付くと inertial 「慣性の・慣性に関する」になる。1語ずつ切るより inert → inertia → inertial の形の連鎖で見るのがコツ。physics では inertial force, inertial frame, inertial navigation などで頻出。スペルは initial と見間違えやすいので、inerti- をひとかたまりで認識するとよい。
Learn `inertial` through technical phrases, not by itself: `inertial force`, `inertial mass`, `inertial frame`, `inertial navigation`. It belongs strongly to physics and engineering. Do not confuse it with `inert`, which usually means inactive or not reacting.
Inertial forces appear in accelerating reference frames.
慣性力は加速している基準系で現れます。
The inertial mass of an object determines its resistance to acceleration.
物体の慣性質量はその加速への抵抗を決定します。
Inertial reference frames are fundamental to Newton's laws of motion.
慣性基準系はニュートンの運動法則の基礎となります。

inertial は inertia「慣性」+ -al で、inertia はラテン語 iners「不活発な」に由来する。iners は in-「否定」+ ars/artis「技・働き」で、みずから働かない感覚が核だから、inert や artisan と比べると「今の状態にとどまる力」とつながる。
Inertial comes from inertia plus the suffix -al. Inertia comes from Latin iners, meaning inactive or unskilled, built from in- "not" and a root related to ars, "skill" or "art." The old sense was of something that does not act by itself, which later became the scientific idea of resistance to change; related words include inert and artisan.
