覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず expensive「高価な」を確実にし、その前に否定の in- が付くと inexpensive「高価ではない」= 手ごろ、さらに -ly で「手ごろな値段で」という副詞になると押さえる。buy it inexpensively, furnish a room inexpensively, travel inexpensively のように、物を買う・部屋を整える・旅行するなどの動作のやり方を説明する語。cheaply も近いが、cheap は「安っぽい」の含みが出ることがあり、inexpensively は「費用を抑えて」の中立表現。形容詞 inexpensive との品詞違いにも注意。
Start from `expensive`, then add `in-` to get `inexpensive`, and `-ly` to show how you do something. So you can `travel inexpensively` or `buy furniture inexpensively`. It is often more neutral than `cheaply`, which can sound negative.

inexpensively の語源・成り立ち Etymology
inexpensively は in-「否定」+ expensive + -ly から成り、expensive はラテン語 expendere「払い出す・量る」に由来します。expense や expend と同根なので、「外へ出る支出が大きくないさま」だと見ると、安価にという意味が見えてきます。
Inexpensively combines in- "not," expensive, and -ly. Expensive comes from Latin expendere, meaning "to weigh out" and later "to pay out," which also gave English expense and expend. The sense moved from money being paid out to cost, so the adverb means doing something without much cost.
