摂取する
解説 Definition
ingesting は ingest(摂取する、体内に取り込む)の現在分詞・動名詞です。食べ物、飲み物、薬、異物などを口から体内に入れる場合に使われます。
The present participle or gerund of ingest, referring to taking food, drink, medicine, or another substance into the body, usually through the mouth.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
原形 ingest「口から体内に取り込む」に -ing を付けた形で、ingest /ɪnˈdʒest/ から ingesting /ɪnˈdʒestɪŋ/ となります。in-「中へ」の感覚を生かし、medicine、salt、liquid などを体の中へ入れる場面を思い浮かべます。digest は取り込んだ後の「消化」です。
Start with ingest and simply add -ing: ingesting, pronounced /ɪnˈdʒestɪŋ/. Use the prefix in- as a clue to movement “into” the body. Imagine a patient ingesting medicine, a person ingesting too much salt, or someone accidentally ingesting a dangerous liquid. Keep it separate from digesting: ingesting is the act of taking a substance in, while digesting is the later process of breaking it down inside the body. The noun ingestion provides another useful link to the same formal or medical context.

ingesting の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 ingerere(中に運び入れる)の過去分詞 ingestus に由来。in-(中へ)+ gerere(運ぶ)に分解できる。digest(消化する)や suggest(提案する)も同じ gerere が語根。体内に「運び入れる」から摂取の意味になった。
Ingesting is formed from ingest plus the participial ending -ing. Ingest comes through Latin ingestus, the past participle of ingerere, meaning “to carry in” or “to bring into.” The Latin elements are in-, “into,” and gerere, “to carry or bear.” This idea of carrying something inward developed into the modern sense of taking a substance into the body.
