解説 Definition
人から受けた親切や助け、恩恵に対して感謝の気持ちを示さないことを指す。単に礼を言わないだけでなく、助けてもらった相手に冷淡に接したり、その恩を当然のもののように扱ったりする態度も含む。
Ingratitude is a lack of thanks or appreciation for kindness, help, or generosity. It is used when someone does not value what others have done for them.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
gratitude（感謝）を知っていれば、ingratitude は in- が付いて「感謝がないこと」と見抜けます。grateful → gratitude → ungrateful → ingratitude と、形容詞・名詞を並べて覚えると定着しやすいです。単なる rudeness（無礼）より、「親切や助けを受けたのに感謝しない」点が核心。show ingratitude, repay kindness with ingratitude のような言い回しで、恩を受けた場面ごと覚えると強いです。似た語 ingrate は「恩知らずな人」なので、状態か人かも区別すると混同しにくくなります。

ingratitudeは古フランス語を経て後期ラテン語ingratitudoにさかのぼり、in-「否定」+ gratus「ありがたい」+ -itude「状態」でできています。gratitudeやgratuityと同根で、「ありがたさのない状態」と見えると、忘恩の冷たさが語形そのままに伝わります。
From Old French and Late Latin ingratitudo, built from in- "not," gratus "pleasing, thankful," and -itude "state or condition." It is related to gratitude and gratuity. The word originally meant the state of not being thankful, and then developed into the stronger sense of thanklessness or lack of appreciation.
