An intimation is an indirect hint or slight sign that something is true, likely, or about to happen. It is a formal word used when someone suggests something without saying it clearly. It can also mean a quiet or subtle notice.

intimation はラテン語 intimare「内奥を知らせる」にさかのぼり、intimus「最も内側の」が背景にあります。intimate や intimacy と同根で、心の内にあるものを少し外へにじませる感覚から、「ほのめかし」の意味が生まれました。
Intimation goes back to Latin intimare, meaning "to make known" or "to announce inwardly," from intimus, "innermost." It shares its root with intimate and intimacy. The idea moved from revealing something from deep inside to giving only a slight sign or hint of what is meant.
