inure
慣らす・慣れる
解説 Definition
何かに慣れさせる、または慣れる。継続的な暴露により、不快なものにも耐性がつくことを意味します。
Inure means to make someone become used to something difficult, unpleasant, or harmful through repeated experience. It is often used in the form 'be inured to' to show that a person no longer reacts strongly. This is a formal word and is more common in writing than in everyday speech.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず「ただ慣れる」の普通表現は be used to。inure はそれより硬く、反復的にさらされて不快なものへの耐性がつく感じで覚えると残りやすいです。よく be inured to criticism / hardship / pain の形で出て、「批判・苦境・痛みで感覚が鍛えられて平気になる」という場面が定番。pleasant な対象にはあまり使わず、insure や endure と見間違えないこと。
Think of `inure` as a formal, stronger version of `get used to`. It usually suggests repeated exposure to something unpleasant until it no longer affects you much, as in `be inured to criticism` or `hardship`. Also keep it separate from similar-looking words like `insure` and `endure`.

inure の語源・成り立ち Etymology
inure は in-「中へ」+ ure「慣行・使用」から成り、もとは in ure「実地で使って」に由来します。ure は古フランス語経由でラテン語 opera 系に連なり、「使ううち慣れる」が今の意味です。関連語に enure, use があります。
Inure comes from an older phrase in ure, meaning "in use" or "in practice." Ure came through French and referred to use, habit, or practice. The sense developed from being in regular use to becoming used to something through experience; compare enure and use.
