原子または分子が電子を失ったり獲得したりして、イオンに変化するプロセスを指します。水中で塩がイオンに分かれるような解離とは区別され、化学や物理学で重要な現象です。
Ionisation is the process in which an atom or molecule gains or loses electric charge and becomes an ion. It is used in chemistry, physics, and discussions of radiation or gases. The word describes a scientific change in the structure of matter.

ion を見たらまず「イオン」。そこに -ise「〜化する」→ ionise「イオン化する」、さらに -ation / -isation で「〜すること」という名詞になります。つまり ionisation は『イオンにする過程』と分解して覚えると安定します。化学では radiation, dissociation, oxidation など“変化のプロセス”を表す -ation 語が多いので同じ型で整理すると残りやすいです。文脈では gas ionisation, ionisation energy などで出やすく、ion そのものではなく『イオンになる／させる現象』を指すと押さえると混同しにくいです。英式は ionisation、米式は ionization。

ionisation は ion＋-isation で、「イオンにすること」が直訳です。ion はギリシャ語 ienai「行く」から造られた語で、anion や cation も同根なので、電極へ移動していく粒子という発想が、そのままイオン化の名に入っています。
