jointed の語源・成り立ち Etymology
joint は古フランス語 joint、さらにラテン語 iunctus「結びつけられた」にさかのぼり、語根は iungere「つなぐ」です。そこに -ed が付いて「節でつながった」「継ぎ目のある」という形容詞になりました。部品が連結された状態を思うと意味がつかみやすいです。関連語は join, junction。
Jointed is formed from joint plus -ed. Joint entered English through Old French joint, from Latin iunctus, the past participle of iungere, meaning “to join” or “to yoke.” The same Latin root appears in words such as junction and conjunction. As an adjective, jointed describes something provided with joints or divided into sections connected at joints.
