noun

変態へんたい

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

kink「ねじれ・普通でない癖」に形容詞化の -y が付いた語で、本来は「ねじれた」、口語では性的嗜好が型破りなことを表す。日本語の「変態」に近い人物名詞として扱う場合も、英語では通常 a kinky person や a kinkster の方が自然。侮蔑的になり得るため、使用場面には注意する。

Start with kink, meaning a twist, bend, or unusual preference, and add adjectival -y: kink becomes kinky. The physical idea of being twisted developed into the figurative sense “sexually unconventional.” Although the Japanese label 変態 may suggest a noun, English kinky is normally an adjective, as in “kinky behavior” or “a kinky person.” If it appears alone as a label for somebody, understand it as an informal nominal use and expect it to sound unusual or judgmental. This grammar warning is as important as the meaning.

kinky の語源・成り立ち Etymology

kinky はオランダ語系の kink「ねじれ・もつれ」に、形容詞化の -y が付いた語です。物が曲がる感覚から「普通の筋道から外れた」へ意味が広がり、性的に風変わりという語感も生まれました。関連語は kink、kinked。

Kinky is formed from kink plus the adjective-forming suffix -y. Kink entered English through Dutch or a closely related Germanic source and originally referred to a twist, curl, or sharp bend. The adjective first described things that were twisted or tightly curled. From the broader idea of departing from a straight or conventional course, it later developed informal senses involving unusual sexual preferences. Its standard grammatical role remains adjectival.
