ひざまずくとは、両膝を地面に付けて跪く姿勢を取ることです。礼拝、哀願、敬礼など、様々な文化的・宗教的な場面で行われます。
To kneel means to go down onto one or both knees. People often kneel when praying, showing respect, asking for something seriously, or doing work close to the ground. The verb describes both a physical movement and, sometimes, a symbolic act.

kneel は古英語 cnēowlian にさかのぼり、語幹は knee「ひざ」に動詞化要素が付いた形です。knee や kneecap と同根で、意味はもともと「ひざの姿勢を取ること」そのものなので、祈りや服従の含みへ自然に広がりました。
