聖職者ではない一般信者、あるいは特定の分野の専門知識や訓練を持たない一般人のこと。
The laity are ordinary members of a religious community who are not priests or other official religious leaders. The word is mainly used in discussions about religion and church organization.

laity は「俗人の身分」を表す lay に -ity が付いた語で、lay は古フランス語 lai、さらに後期ラテン語 laicus、ギリシャ語 laikos「民衆の」にさかのぼります。聖職者ではなく“人々の側”という感覚から「信徒」を意味します。関連語は layman、laic。
