laity は「俗人の身分」を表す lay に -ity が付いた語で、lay は古フランス語 lai、さらに後期ラテン語 laicus、ギリシャ語 laikos「民衆の」にさかのぼります。聖職者ではなく“人々の側”という感覚から「信徒」を意味します。関連語は layman、laic。
