legalese は legal「法律の」+ -ese「〜語・〜風の言い回し」から成る語です。legal はラテン語 lex/legis「法」にさかのぼり、journalese や officialese も同型なので、「法律そのもの」より「法律っぽい回りくどい文体」を指す理由が見えてきます。
