Let alone is used to show that if one thing is not possible or not true, then another thing is even less possible or true. It adds strong emphasis when comparing two situations. It usually follows a negative or limiting statement.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
覚える軸は「低いハードルすら無理なら、より高いものはなおさら無理」という段差です。まず前半で控えめな内容を否定し、let alone の後ろにそれ以上の内容を置く型で固定すると定着します。I can't cook pasta, let alone a full course. のように、後半ほど難しい・大きい内容になるのが基本。even より強く、much less に近い否定寄りの表現として覚えると使い分けしやすいです。
Think of a stair: if the lower step is impossible, the higher step is even more impossible. In sentences, put the smaller or easier thing first, then a bigger or harder thing after `let alone`. It often appears in negative statements and feels stronger than `even`.

let は古英語 laetan「残す・させる」、alone は all one が縮んで『ただ一つ』を表しました。否定文で『それ一つでさえ放っておけない』が強まり、『ましてや』の含みになります。近縁語に lone、lonely があります。
Let comes from Old English laetan, meaning "leave" or "allow," and alone grew from all one, meaning "by itself" or "single." In older use, let alone meant to leave something by itself. In negative sentences, it began to stress that if even one thing is not possible, something stronger is even less possible. That is how it developed the modern sense of "much less" or "not to mention."
