mention はラテン語 mentio にさかのぼり、さらに mens「心」とつながるため、もともとは「心に載せる、思い起こす」に近い語感をもつ。ment- の関連語に mental があり、not to mention は「口に出すどころか心に浮かべるまでもない」から『言うまでもなく』になる。
