A linker is a computer program that joins compiled pieces of code into one complete executable file or library. This is a technical term used in software development and build systems.

linker は link「つなぐ」に、道具・行為者を表す接尾辞 -er が付いた語です。link は古ノルド語 hlekkr（鎖の輪）に由来し、「輪をつないで一つにする」感覚から、プログラムを結び合わせるリンカーの意味になりました。関連語は link, hyperlink です。
