金銭や利益を軽蔑的に指す言葉です。金銭への貪欲さを批判する文脈でよく使われますが、不正な方法で得たこと自体を必ず意味するわけではありません。
Lucre means money or profit, especially when it is seen as dishonest, selfish, or morally bad. It is a literary or formal word, not one used often in everyday conversation. The word usually appears in negative contexts.

money や profit の普通の言い方ではなく、「金そのもの」より「金目当てのいやらしいもうけ」を感じさせる語。単体より filthy lucre（汚い金）のかたまりで覚えると定着しやすい。gain や profit が中立なのに対し、lucre は greed や corruption の文脈に寄りやすいのが特徴。なお lucrative は「もうかる」で比較的中立だが、lucre は否定的になりやすい。この差もセットで押さえると混同しにくい。
