英語 lungi はヒンディー語・ウルドゥー語 lungi の借用で、さらに南インドのドラヴィダ系語にさかのぼるとされます。腰に巻く布の現地名がそのまま英語になった語で、衣服名の sarong と同じく生活文化ごと入った借用語だと考えると意味がつかめます。
Lungi was borrowed into English from Hindi and Urdu lungi, and it is thought to go back further to Dravidian languages of South India. English took over the local name along with the garment itself. In that way, it is similar to other clothing loans such as sarong, where the cultural term entered English directly.
