magnetics は magnet「磁石」に性質や学問を表す -ics が付いた語で、magnet はギリシャ語 magnētis lithos「マグネシアの石」に由来する。magnetic や magnetism と同根で、土地名がそのまま「引きつける力」の名になったとわかる。
