ascitesはギリシャ語askos「袋・革袋」にさかのぼり、腹が袋のように膨れる状態を表した語。そこから腹水の意味になり、ascusやascosporeと同系と知ると、「液体をためる袋」というイメージが医学語の核だと分かる。
Ascites comes from Greek askos, meaning "bag" or "wineskin." The image was of the belly swelling like a skin or bag filled with liquid. From that picture, the word developed into a medical term for that condition. The same root appears in ascus and ascospore.
