覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
maire はフランス語で「市長」。英語の mayor と同じ公職を指すが、フランスの自治体についてフランス語の称号を残して述べる場合に現れる。「the maire of the village」「elected maire」「mairie(市役所)」を一組にし、綴りの ai と語末 e を確認する。英語一般の市長なら通常 mayor を使うため、フランスという文脈が識別の鍵になる。
Treat maire as the French civic title corresponding to English mayor. Remember it through a small group of French local-government expressions: le maire is the mayor, and la mairie is the town hall or municipal administration. In English prose, maire normally appears when the writer wants to preserve the French title, as in “the maire of the village,” rather than as the ordinary English word for every mayor. The spelling link between maire and mairie helps fix the institutional setting. Also note that maire is a title or common noun, not inherently a personal name.

maire の語源・成り立ち Etymology
フランス語 maire は、古フランス語の形容詞 maire(「より大きい」)が名詞化した語で、ラテン語 maior(「より大きい」)に由来する。英語 mayor も同じラテン語にさかのぼる同源語である。
French maire descends through Old French from Latin maior, meaning “greater” or “senior,” the comparative form of magnus, “great.” In later Latin and medieval administration, maior developed official senses referring to a superior or chief officer. English mayor ultimately comes from the same Latin source through French, which explains the close meaning despite the different modern spellings. In current French, maire is the standard title for the head of a commune.
