一度した約束やコミットメント、契約を破棄すること。信頼を損なうような背約行為。
To renege means to fail to do what you promised or agreed to do. It is often used for breaking a deal, promise, or commitment after saying yes. This word is more formal than simply saying "break a promise."
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
語中の -neg- を negative と結びつけて、「約束にあとから no を言う語」と覚えると残りやすい。renege は re- が付くので、いったん受けた話を後でひっくり返す感じ。break a promise や back out of an agreement に近いが、単なる予定変更ではなく信頼を損ねる裏切りの響きがある。renege on a promise / deal / commitment の形でよく出る。refuse よりも『一度引き受けた後で撤回する』点が核心。
Notice the middle part `neg`, like in `negative` or saying `no`. `Renege` is when someone first agrees, then turns back and says no later. Remember the common pattern `renege on a promise` or `renege on a deal`.

renegeはスペイン語renegarを経てラテン語re-「逆らって・再び」+ negare「否定する」に由来します。いったん受けたものをあとで「ない」と言い直す感覚から、「約束を破る」意味へ進みました。negateやnegativeも同じ否定の語根です。
Renege came into English through Spanish renegar, from Latin parts re- and negare, meaning "to deny." The original sense was to deny again or deny what one had accepted before. From that, the meaning shifted to going back on a promise or refusing to do what was agreed; related words include negate and negative.
