back out of the driveway のように out of の後に出発地点を置き、約束や計画から撤退する比喩的用法とは異なる。
To back out means to decide not to do something that you had agreed, promised, or planned to do. It is often used for arrangements, deals, or social plans. The phrase usually suggests changing your mind late, which may cause problems for other people.
特に `back out of a deal / promise / plan` の形が頻出で、単なる `cancel` より「合意後に手を引く」感じが強め。
Picture someone taking a step back after already agreeing. `Back out` is often used when a person withdraws from a plan, deal, or promise at a later stage. Remember the pattern `back out of` something, such as `back out of an agreement`.
He backed out of the partnership at the last minute.
The patient backed out of the surgery after asking more questions.
They promised not to back out of the agreement.

関連語:backup(後退・支援)、backtrack(引き返す)。
Back out combines back, from Old English bæc, and out, from Old English ut. The literal image is moving backward and away from a place. From that physical idea, it developed the figurative sense of withdrawing from an agreement, promise, or plan. Related expressions include backtrack and back away.
