覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
mamba はアフリカ産の毒ヘビの分類名で、black mamba、green mamba という色名との組み合わせで覚える。a mamba in a tree、observe a mamba from a safe distance のように使う。cobra は別系統の毒ヘビなので同義語にせず、「マンバという特定の仲間」と限定する。
Learn mamba as the group name in the familiar combinations black mamba and green mamba. These are highly venomous African snakes, often described in contexts involving grass, bushes, trees, or careful observation from a safe distance. The color phrase can be misleading: a black mamba is named for the dark inside of its mouth, not a uniformly black body. Keep mamba separate from cobra; both are venomous snakes in the broader elapid family, but they are not the same kind of snake. The word itself was borrowed from a southern African language.

mamba の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ズールー語のimamba(大型毒蛇)に由来するアフリカ起源の語。南アフリカの現地語がそのまま英語に借用された。関連語:black mamba、green mamba。世界最速の毒蛇として知られ、現地の言葉がそのまま学術名・英語名になった例である。
Mamba was borrowed into English from a southern African language, commonly traced to Zulu imamba, a word for a mamba or large venomous snake. It is therefore a direct borrowing of an Indigenous African animal name rather than a word assembled from English elements. English uses mamba for snakes of the genus Dendroaspis. Species and common names formed with it include black mamba and green mamba, reflecting the term’s later role in zoological naming.
