Merciless means showing no pity, kindness, or willingness to forgive. It is often used to describe people, actions, or conditions that are extremely harsh or cruel. The word can also describe something severe that does not stop or become softer.

まず mercy を「慈悲・情け」として固定し、-less を「〜がない」と見れば、merciless はそのまま「慈悲がない」。反対語に近い merciful（情け深い）と対で覚えると残りやすいです。strict や harsh より冷たく、相手をかわいそうと思って手加減する気配がない語。merciless attack / criticism / heat のように「容赦なく相手を追い詰める」場面でよく出ます。ruthless と近いですが、merciless は特に『情けをかけない』感覚がつかみやすい単語です。

mercilessはmercy「慈悲」に、欠如を表す古英語系接尾辞-lessが付いた語。mercyは古フランス語merci、さらにラテン語merces「報い・情け」にさかのぼり、「慈悲がない」ので無慈悲の意になる。同系にmercifulやmercenaryがある。
