metronome
Definition
A metronome is a device that produces regular audible or visible beats at a selected rate, usually measured in beats per minute. Musicians use it to establish, practice, and maintain a steady tempo.
Memory Tip
set the metronome to 80 BPM、practice with a metronome、keep a steady beat
Break metronome into the Greek-based ideas metron, “measure,” and nomos, “rule”: it is a device that gives a measured rule for musical time. Picture a pianist practicing while the metronome clicks evenly or a drummer setting it to a slower number of beats per minute. Common patterns are practice with a metronome, set the metronome to 80 BPM, and keep a steady beat. Unlike a clock, it is not mainly telling the time of day; it supplies evenly spaced beats so that a musician can learn or check a chosen tempo.

Etymology
ギリシャ語 metron(測る)+ nomos(法則)から。 metro- は metric(メートル法)、-nome は astronomy(天文学)の -nomy と同根。
Metronome entered English through a modern European formation based on Greek metron, “measure,” and nomos, “law, rule, or established practice.” The name was created for an instrument that regulates musical time by marking equal intervals. Its elements therefore describe the device’s function rather directly: it provides a measured rule for tempo. The word became established in the nineteenth century as mechanical metronomes were developed and promoted for musical practice and tempo indication.
