To micromanage means to control every small detail of someone else's work or activity. It is often used in workplaces when a manager gives too much close attention and does not allow enough independence. The word usually has a negative meaning.

micro- は microscope などの「小さい」。manage と合わせて、「管理者が視野を縮め、全体ではなく細部にまで手を入れる」と捉えると残りやすいです。単なる manage が業務を回すことなら、micromanage は部下や作業の一つ一つに口を出しすぎる響きで、たいてい否定的。micromanage a team / employees の形で見たら、「任せず細部を握る管理」と結び付けると忘れにくいです。反対イメージの delegate（任せる）と対で覚えると、ニュアンス差も整理しやすいです。
