解説 Definition

milling は mill に動作名詞の -ing が付いた語で、mill は古英語を経てラテン語 molere『粉にひく』へさかのぼります。molar や millstone も同系で、回転して削る加工が『ひく・すりつぶす』感覚から名づけられたと分かります。
"Milling" comes from mill with the ending -ing. Mill goes back through Old English to Latin molere, meaning "to grind." Because of that root, the word moved from grinding grain to any process of cutting or shaping by rotating machinery, and it is related to words like millstone and molar.
