覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
Minotaur はギリシャ語で Minos「ミノス王」と tauros「雄牛」を組み合わせた「ミノスの牛」が由来です。牛の頭と人間の体を持ち、Labyrinth「迷宮」に閉じ込められた怪物という一組の場面で記憶しましょう。神話上の特定の怪物なら通常 the Minotaur と大文字で表します。
Break Minotaur into its historical parts: Minos, the king of Crete, and Greek tauros, “bull.” The name therefore means “the bull of Minos.” Fix the word in memory through one vivid mythological scene: a creature with a bull’s head and a human body waiting inside the Labyrinth. The common phrase is the Minotaur because it usually refers to the particular monster from Greek mythology. Labyrinth is the most useful companion word, while Taurus, the bull of the zodiac, helps reinforce the tauros connection.

minotaur の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ギリシャ語 Minōtauros から。クレタ王 Minos の名 + tauros(雄牛)で「ミノスの牛」の意。迷宮ラビュリントスに閉じ込められた牛頭人身の怪物。関連語: labyrinth(迷宮)、Taurus(おうし座)。
Minotaur comes through Latin Minotaurus from Greek Minōtauros. The Greek name combines Minōs, referring to King Minos of Crete, with tauros, “bull,” and thus literally means “the bull of Minos.” In Greek mythology, this name was given to the bull-headed, human-bodied creature confined in the Labyrinth. English later adopted the classical name in its present form.
