解説 Definition
misrepresenting は、事実・人物・意見・状況などを不正確に、または誤解を招く形で伝える行為を表します。意図的な虚偽の説明にも、不注意や誤解による不正確な説明にも使われます。
Misrepresenting is the act or process of presenting a fact, person, statement, or situation inaccurately or misleadingly. It may describe deliberate deception or an inaccurate account caused by carelessness or misunderstanding.
使い方 Usage
- ここでは行為を名詞的に表す動名詞です。misrepresenting the facts/data のように、後ろに説明の対象を置けます。 Here, misrepresenting is a gerund naming an action. It can take an object, as in misrepresenting the facts or misrepresenting the data.

misrepresenting は mis-「誤って」+ represent「表す・述べる」+ -ing から成り、represent はラテン語 repraesentare「目の前に示す」に由来します。present や representation と同系で、「本来の姿を誤って示す」ことから虚偽の説明という意味になります。
Misrepresenting consists of mis-, meaning “wrongly or badly,” represent, and the participial or gerund suffix -ing. Represent entered English through French from Latin repraesentare, meaning “to present, display, or make present.” Its elements are re- and praesentare, related to present. Adding mis- changes the idea from presenting something to presenting it in an inaccurate or misleading form.
