Etymology
The grape name entered English through French muscat, from Italian moscato. It ultimately goes back to Late Latin muscus, meaning “musk,” because these grapes have a strong, characteristic fragrance likened to musk. Muscatel is a related grape and wine term, while musk shares the same distant lexical source. The place name Muscat has a separate history.
