柄
解説 Definition
柄とは剣やナイフの刀身と反対側にある握る部分です。手で握るための形状や装飾が施されることが多く、使い手の手にフィットするよう工夫されています。多くの柄には指が滑らない工夫や安全のためのガードも取り付けられています。

hilt の語源・成り立ち Etymology
hiltは古英語hiltにさかのぼるゲルマン系語で、明確な接頭辞分解はありませんが、holdと同系の「つかんで保つ」感覚をもつ語と考えられます。刃ではなく手で保持する部分だから「柄」となり、withholdやupholderのholdを思うと意味がつながります。
Hilt comes from Old English hilt and is part of an old Germanic word family. It is thought to be linked in sense to words like hold, with the idea of grasping or keeping in the hand. Because it named the part of a sword that is held, it came to mean the handle of the blade. The basic meaning has changed very little over time.
