解説 Definition
musket は、昔使われた長い銃身の「マスケット銃」という意味です。カタカナの「マスケット」と同じく歴史上の火器を指し、現代の一般的な銃には普通使いません。
A musket is a long, historically used shoulder firearm, typically loaded from the muzzle and associated especially with infantry from the sixteenth through the nineteenth century. Many muskets had smoothbore barrels, distinguishing them from rifles with grooved barrels.

16世紀にフランス語経由で英語へ入り、イタリア語「moschetto」に由来します。ラテン語語根「musca（ハエ）」に縮小辞「-etto」が付き、銃を鳥の名で呼ぶ習慣から転じました。同語根の「mosquito（蚊）」と比較すると、小型化のイメージが火器の命名原理と直結しており納得できます。
Musket entered English in the sixteenth century through French mousquet, from Italian moschetto. The Italian word was a diminutive associated with mosca, “fly,” ultimately from Latin musca. Names of small creatures and birds were applied to several weapons in European usage, though the precise steps behind this particular naming are debated. Mosquito is ultimately related to the same Latin word for “fly.”
