北米に生息する半水生の齧歯類。ビーバーに似ているが小型で、毛皮が利用される。
A muskrat is a small animal that lives in or near water, especially in North America. It looks a little like a large rat, but it is not the same kind of animal. The word is mainly used in nature, wildlife, and animal studies.

muskrat は見た目ほど musk＋rat の単純な合成ではなく、アルゴンキン語系の語（おそらくポウハタン語）に由来するとされる。英語で musk と rat に引き寄せて理解されたため、この形で北米の動物名として定着した。関連語は musquash, musky。
Muskrat is not simply a native English combination of musk and rat, even though it looks that way now. It is believed to come from an Algonquian language, probably through a form like musquash, and English speakers reshaped it into a more familiar form. That change made the word look English while keeping its use as the name of a North American animal.
