nesting は nest「巣」+ -ing で、語源は古英語 nest、さらにゲルマン祖語 *nistaz にさかのぼります。nidi- をもつ nidus や nidify も遠い同根で、もともと「巣作りする」が、物がぴたりと収まる「入れ子」に広がったのは「巣におさめる」感覚の比喩です。
