疲れているときや退屈な場面で、知らないうちに短時間うとうとしたり居眠りしたりすることを表す句動詞。ベッドで本格的に眠るというより、座ったままつい眠気に負ける場面でよく使う。授業中や会議中、電車の中などで思わず目を閉じてしまうような状況に合う表現。
