解説 Definition
oasis は、砂漠の中で水や植物がある場所、つまりオアシスという意味です。日本語と同じように使えますが、英語でも主に実際の地理的な場所を指す語として覚えるとよいです。

Oasis entered English through Latin oasis from Greek óasis. The Greek word was borrowed from an Egyptian source, represented in Coptic by a word referring to an inhabited or fertile place in the desert. Its history therefore matches its geographical meaning: land made habitable by the presence of water amid an otherwise dry region. The plural oases preserves a classical-style change in ending.
