oddity は odd「半端な・普通から外れた」に名詞化接尾辞 -ity が付いた語。odd は古ノルド語 oddi「突き出た点・余り」にさかのぼり、「一つだけ余る」が「奇妙さ」へ伸びた。odd, oddball が近縁。
