offensive は offend「害する・ぶつかる」に形容詞語尾 -ive が付いた語で、offend は古フランス語を経てラテン語 offendere「ぶつける」にさかのぼります。offense と同根で、「相手にぶつかって害を与える」感覚から、攻撃的な・不快なという意味になりました。
Offensive is built from offend plus the adjective ending -ive. Offend came through Old French from Latin offendere, originally meaning "strike against" or "bump into." From the idea of hitting or harming someone, the word developed both the sense of "attacking" and the sense of "causing hurt or displeasure."
