勤務中や当番中であることを意味し、『仕事で現場にいる』『任務に就いている』といった状況で使われる。警察官や看護師などの職業で、交替制のシフトを区別するときに頻繁に登場する。
If someone is on duty, they are working at that time and responsible for doing their job. It is often used for nurses, police officers, guards, and other workers with set duty periods. The opposite idea is off duty.

dutyはアングロ・フランス語dueté（負うべきもの）に由来し、ラテン語debere（負う）が根底にある。debt（負債）やdue（期限の）と同根。「負うべき務め」が原義で、on dutyは「その務めの上にある＝勤務中」を表す。
