Etymology

関連語にoutperform(上回る)やoutshine(輝きで勝る)がある。

Outdo combines out-, used in verbs to mean “surpass” or “do better than,” with do. The compound continues an old Germanic pattern represented in Old English by elements corresponding to “out” and “do.” Because do is irregular, outdo follows the same internal pattern: do–did–done becomes outdo–outdid–outdone. Comparable modern formations include outperform and outshine, in which out- likewise marks superiority over a competitor.
