まず `pair` が見えれば「2つで1組」、そこに `clockwise` や `lengthwise` と同じ `-wise` が付いて「そのやり方で」と考えると覚えやすいです。つまり pairwise は「1個ずつ」でも「全部まとめて」でもなく、「2つずつ組にして」処理する感覚。統計や計算機では `pairwise comparison` `pairwise distance` の形が頻出で、要素を総当たりで2件ずつ比べる場面を思い浮かべると定着します。

英語内でpair＋-wise（古英語wīse「やり方・様式」）からできた語です。pairはアングロ＝フランス語を経てラテン語par「等しい」にさかのぼり、「二つを同等に組にする」感覚から「ペアごと」の意味になります。関連語はpair、parity。
Pairwise was formed in English from pair and the suffix -wise, which comes from Old English and meant "way" or "manner." Pair came through Anglo-French from Latin par, meaning "equal." So the word originally meant doing something in the manner of pairs, with the sense of treating things two by two; compare pair and parity.
